The Gift

The Gift oil on masonite 6" x 6"
On this piece I'm really excited about the color scheme, especially the red against the turquoise blue-green. I sought to recreate feeling of anticipation before opening a present, especially a gift so pretty!  Lately while painting I've been thinking about a phrase my old watercolor teacher would always say, "make colors tasty," it's such good advice.

Stacked 6" x 6" oil on masonite

I painted this still life under natural lighting in order to get a morning feel for the coffee cups. I counted my strokes while I did them which allowed me to simplify the objects. I'm starting to really like the idea of getting an object's essence rather than painting the form accurately, it allows a lot more flexibility with the colors and brushwork.

Sunset 10" x 10" oil on canvas

I've been reading a lot about Van Gogh so I was inspired to do a painting with a complementary color scheme. I love how the sun looks foggy on a cloudy day.
