Sunny Day

Sunny Day 10" x 10" oil on canvas

This is a plein-air painting I did about a year ago at Darby Metro Park. I like the immediacy of plein-air painting, rushing against the sun in order to capture a scene forces an artist to use the suggestion, which is often more powerful than expressing only the form; it shows an individual's perception of the world.

Brunch 6" x 6" oil on masonite
Click to Bid!
Natural lighting is always fun to do because it's a race against the sun. I'm becoming fond of that purple-blue color, it's so jovial, especially in the shadows.

Olympic Mountain Range

Olympic Mountain Range 8" x 8" oil on masonite

This is from a few photos I took while in Seattle last week at Pike's Place. I did a couple of sketches in charcoal before I started and I think it went a lot easier, combined with the fact that the colors are mostly monochromatic. I used to live there when I was really young so it felt refreshing to smell the alpine again.

Umbria 6" x 7" acrylic on watercolor paper

I painted this piece about a year ago and I found it today in pile of canvases. This scene is from a picture I took while studying abroad in Italy, we took a day trip to this region called Umbria, it sits right under Tuscany. My classmates and I were at an olive oil factory, where we got oil that was right off the press, I haven't tried an olive oil quite so good since then.

Preston 11" x 14" oil on masonite
This is a commissioned piece my boyfriend asked me to make for his father, he's a retired Preston truck driver. I thought it'd be nice to have an Ohio farm scene behind it, since he now lives in the Philippines. It's an overcast day so the image doesn't have the same orange, I've found that I need to take a picture of a painting at 4 on a sunny day to get accurate color.

Lightbulbs in Repose

Lightbulbs in Repose 8" x 8" oil on masonite
This is a commission I was given by someone who bought by other Lightbulb painting at the CCAD art sale. She sent me a picture of this set up and I used my artistic license to change the composition and the colors. The burnt sienna on the table really compliments the mahogany floating frame I got for it.

Still Life with Wildflowers and Lilies

Still Life with Wildflowers and Lilies 16" x 20" oil on canvas
This is an arrangement my dad put together using the flowers in his garden, so much color! I've been thinking about Van Gogh's Sunflowers and how he created tactility in the paint, I also admire how he would create whole paintings in one session.
